Cockle is an ancient city in the mountains about one hundred and seventy kilometers from Rome, the capital of Italy. This type of medieval-style town remains intact and is rare in Italy. Winding streets run the length and breadth of the rolling hills. The houses have stone walls on both sides of the streets. A long and steep church stands on the hilltop square. For centuries, festival activities of all kinds, secular or religious, were popular in the area throughout the year. The “Snake Parade” activity, which takes place every first Thursday of May, makes Cockle a world-famous city.
On the day of the parade, snake catchers arrive in the square in the morning with a long snake on their arm.

Today, the institute is known as the world’s leading anti-venom research institute.

Boomlangs are found throughout Zimbabwe and are the only large green snake found outside of the Honed Valley and some other areas along the eastern border. The large green snakes found in the Honed Valley can be, and usually are, green mambas. For some reason boom tongues are not that common in the Zambezi Valley. Only males are green, female’s brown, olive or grey, white under the belly. It is the only snake in Zimbabwe where the male and female are of different colors. The males are conspicuously green, and the scales are sometimes streaked with black. The shade of green can vary, in some samples it can be powder blue. Juveniles are dark mottled gray or brown above, often with snake-like markings on vines or twigs. The most characteristic feature of the boom tongue, both male and female, is the very large eye. They are relatively large snakes, sometimes reaching 2 meters or longer. Juveniles are green only after they reach a length of 750 mm or more if they are males. This means that any green snake you come across that is less than and not found in the Honed Valley or any other area of the eastern border is non-venomous.
