Italy – Snakes on parade

Cockle is an ancient city in the mountains about one hundred and seventy kilometers from Rome, the capital of Italy. This type of medieval-style town remains intact and is rare in Italy. Winding streets run the length and breadth of the rolling hills. The houses have stone walls on both sides of the streets. A long and steep church stands on the hilltop square. For centuries, festival activities of all kinds, secular or religious, were popular in the area throughout the year. The “Snake Parade” activity, which takes place every first Thursday of May, makes Cockle a world-famous city.

On the day of the parade, snake catchers arrive in the square in the morning with a long snake on their arm.

These snakes are just emerging from hibernation and have been captured specifically for the parade. All poisonous fangs of snakes are drawn from their mouths. Therefore they are not dangerous. The exciting period begins when people bring the statue of Saint Dominic to the street, which the locals embrace as a gin. Skilled snake catchers hang snake removal on the statue. The snakes do not run away at all and let people make arrangements freely. All participants in the parade wear traditional clothes. People hold a statue of a snake above their heads, fully protected by armed terrorists. The parade marches gracefully through the streets. The view is spectacular.

The “Serpent Procession” is meant to bless the inhabitants of the city with protection

and distance from any Belial invasion. According to reports, there are many snakes in the area causing problems for the local population. In addition, people can sometimes see packs of wolves. Residents of the city claim that reptiles and fangs bring disasters here. Later, people hold snakes as offerings to show their respect for Saint Dominic. He is said to help protect people from the bite of snakes and wild animals. This result continues to this day.

One of the most fascinating attractions at the Snake Farm is seeing how snake handlers take snake venom and make anti-venom serum. This anti-venom serum is widely used to cure diseases such as typhus, hepatitis, rabies, smallpox and cholera. It is also used as a medicine against harmful snakebites. Today, the institute is known as the world’s leading anti-venom research institute.

Only males are green, female’s brown, olive or grey, white under the belly. It is the only snake in Zimbabwe where the male and female are of different colors. The males are conspicuously green, and the scales are sometimes streaked with black. The shade of green can vary, in some samples it can be powder blue. Juveniles are dark mottled gray or brown above, often with snake-like markings on vines or twigs. The most characteristic feature of the boom tongue, both male and female, is the very large eye. They are relatively large snakes, sometimes reaching 2 meters or longer. Juveniles are green only after they reach a length of 750 mm or more if they are males.
