How to Draw a Pirate Ship A Step-by-Step Guide
During the age of piracy, buccaneers would sail the oceans in their wooden pirate ships to find other ships and fortresses to plunder. All sailors would fear these ships, and the waving skull and crossbones flags would send a chill down the spine of the strongest pirates.
These ships are well-represented in movies, video games, and more, and learning how to draw a pirate ship is a great way to relive the glory days of piracy. However, drawing ships isn’t always easy, so a guide like this is essential! Our step-by-step guide on how to draw a pirate ship will take you on your artistic pirate adventure.

How to Draw a Pirate Ship – Let’s Get Started!
Step 1
For the first step of our guide on how to draw a pirate ship, we’ll start at the top, literally! We will remove the top of the forward mast and the sails of the boat in this part, and you can start with a thin horizontal shape for the top of the mast. Then the sail will be drawn using curved lines coming down from that mast, and you can remove a little flag on top of the mast. Step 2
We will add a few more sails to your pirate ship drawing in this step. For these candles, you can remove them using three triangular shapes with some curved edges. The sails will be attached to the topmast, while the sails’ bottom will connect to the rigging line you drew in the previous step. Also, add some detail to the sails by drawing some rips and tears on the fabric. Pirate ships didn’t always have the luxury of coming into port for repairs, so they often had to do what they had. Once you’ve drawn these, you can add a few more lines to rig more on the ship. Then you are ready for step 3!
Step 3
It’s time to add more sails and the front of the ship in this step of our guide on drawing a pirate ship. First, we’ll start with the front of the boat (or the bow, as it’s known in nautical terms). You can use some straight lines for the pointed front of the ship, and these will turn into some curved lines that go out into the water. We will then add a much larger and square sail than the previous ones you drew, and then we will finish this step by removing the center of the mast. This mast will also have a smaller sail, and the larger one will have more of that heartbreaking detail.
Step 4
The crow’s nest was a small basket-shaped structure on top of the ship’s mast where a lookout could sit. Now we’ll add that to your pirate ship drawing, and on top of that, you can add a little waving flag. You can add another -large square post near the center of the pot. This will also hold a linear mast on top. You can finish this step by adding a slightly curved horizontal line for the boat deck. Once you’ve added all these elements, you’re ready to add the finish—details in the next step before adding some color to the image.
Step 5
Step 5 of this guide on how to draw a pirate ship will focus on finishing the final details and elements of the boat. First, you can start by drawing a large skull and crossbones on a giant sail of the ship. That way, no one will be confused about who is in charge of this ship! You can then use curved lines to create the rest of the ship’s body. Then this body can be finished by drawing some small circular shapes and line details. So it looks fantastic. Once you’ve pulled all this, you could also remove the background to show the seas this ship sails through or maybe even draw inclement weather for it to sail. Step 6
In our reference image, we used some browns for the boat and gave her some black and white sails. This is a set of colors you can choose from, but feel free to use whatever colors you like for your pirate ship drawing! This is a step where you can get creative with it to see what you come up with.
