If you’re an aspiring nurse, there are multiple traits that you should have. From managing your time and communicating with patients and fellow hospital staff down to controlling your emotions, we will list down some skills that you will need to possess as a nurse. After learning the various skills, you can then include them in your resume that you will submit for your application process. Using a resume builder is advisable for a speedy process of writing your resume, as all you’d have to do is input details about yourself as well as the skills you have.

Here are the different useful soft skills to include in your resume:

  1. Communication

Communicating is highly important when nursing to effectively relay information to patients, other nurses, doctors, and other people that you might encounter. Having proper communication skills should be prioritized to ensure the accuracy of the messages that you’re sending to your patients, especially when providing treatment or care for them. For instance, you need to be clear in telling a patient the medicine they need, what time of the day they need it, how many times they should take it, and more.

  1. Problem-solving skills

As a nurse, you have to always be prepared to face anything. From different injuries, illnesses, emergencies, and other incidents, you have to know how to deal with them as effectively as possible. One of a nurse’s responsibilities is to immediately provide care for a patient, especially if a doctor is not present. So if you’re faced with a problem, even if you’ve never experienced it before, you must try your best to deal with it in the best way possible.

  1. Empathy

Being empathetic to your patients is extremely significant as a nurse. Especially since you will be dealing with people of all genders and ages, you need to be able to connect with them and be understanding regardless of who they are. You should treat everyone with kindness and never lose your patience with any patient. You can relate to and react to what patients are experiencing or feeling better, which can help you respond to their needs when you have empathy.

  1. Ability to Remain Calm

As mentioned, you will have to deal with situations that could be new or unfamiliar to you. Some of these instances can definitely be overwhelming, so it is very necessary for a nurse to be able to remain calm and composed. This is crucial so that you would be able to focus and not induce any panic or nervousness from the patient and from other bystanders. In times of extreme stress, nurses need to be able to control their own emotions in addition to their ability to calm others.

  1. Time Management

Nurses often have very busy schedules as they need to accomplish many tasks every day. Most, if not all, nurses need to attend to more than one patient, especially if working in a public hospital. So in order to be able to do all the things you need to do in a day, you must have time management skills. You need to devote specific hours of the day to this task and then the remaining hours for other tasks to sufficiently do your duties.

  1. Stress Management

As was previously said, nurses have a lot of duties and responsibilities to fulfill, which makes the job very stressful. So you have to be able to manage your stress well and cope safely and properly as a nurse. Stress can affect your performance, especially when dealing with patients, as your stress may cause you to feel not only mentally but also physically unwell. Therefore, in order to be able to give your best self when nursing, you need to start by taking care of yourself first.

So those are some of the soft skills that you’re required to have as a nurse. If you possess these skills, you can add them to your resume to help you get a higher chance of being hired. We wish you the best of luck as you venture your way to the medicinal industry!
